ISLAMABAD: Petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) prices have increased in Pakistan, adding to the fuel burden on consumers amid continued volatility in international oil markets.
According to a notification issued by the Petroleum Division, the price of petrol has been increased by Rs4.10 per litre, taking the new price to Rs384.34 per litre. The price of high-speed diesel has also been raised by Rs6.41 per litre, bringing it to Rs415.83 per litre.
The revised fuel prices will take effect from September 16.
The government continues to collect Rs114 per litre in taxes and duties on petrol, while the levy and duties on diesel amount to around Rs100 per litre.
Fuel prices have remained volatile in recent months amid geopolitical tensions and fluctuations in international oil markets. High-speed diesel had previously climbed to a record Rs520.35 per litre on April 3, after rising from around Rs281 per litre following the outbreak of the US-Iran conflict on February 28.
Petrol also reached a peak of Rs458.41 per litre on April 3, after beginning its upward movement from around Rs266 per litre during the first week of March.
The latest increase comes shortly after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a fuel relief scheme for owners of motorcycles, rickshaws, three-wheelers and vehicles with engine capacities of up to 800cc.
The continued changes in fuel prices are expected to affect transportation and household expenses, while diesel prices also have a wider impact on freight and other sectors that depend heavily on fuel.
Consumers and businesses are closely monitoring further movements in global oil prices, which can influence domestic petroleum rates in Pakistan.
