The Punjab government has announced plans to install modern firewall systems in public e-libraries across the province, including those in government schools, colleges, and universities.
The initiative aims to regulate digital access within educational institutions by ensuring that users can only access books and materials available through official government-run online libraries. Under the new system, websites outside the approved e-library network will be restricted, helping to create a controlled and secure digital reading environment.
One of the key objectives of this move is to curb digital piracy. By limiting access to unauthorized sources, the government intends to promote the use of legitimate academic resources and protect intellectual property rights within the education sector.
The firewall installation will be implemented across all public institutions that currently offer e-library and online reading facilities. This includes a wide range of educational setups, ensuring a province-wide impact on digital learning infrastructure.
To support the rollout, the government plans to launch an awareness campaign. Informational posters will be displayed in libraries to guide students and users about the new access policies and help them understand how to use the official e-library systems effectively.
Funding for the project has been allocated in the upcoming fiscal year 2026-27 budget. According to the plan, installation of the firewall systems is scheduled between July 15 and July 31, marking a defined timeline for implementation.
While detailed technical specifications have not yet been disclosed, the initiative reflects a broader push toward digital regulation in the education sector. By strengthening control over online resources, the government aims to improve the quality of academic access while ensuring compliance with copyright laws.
Overall, the firewall system is expected to reshape how students and researchers interact with digital libraries, encouraging the use of verified educational content and enhancing the overall learning experience.
