Pakistan’s energy sector could witness a major transformation as US-based Honeywell Technologies has proposed a comprehensive refinery upgrade and expansion plan aimed at improving the country’s refining capacity and reducing dependence on imported petroleum products.
The proposal was presented during a meeting between Honeywell representatives and Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb in Washington. According to the Finance Ministry, the initiative focuses on modernising Pakistan’s refinery infrastructure, enhancing domestic fuel production and strengthening long-term energy security.
During discussions, both sides explored the use of advanced technology solutions to upgrade existing refineries and improve operational efficiency. The meeting also covered possible financing options through international institutions, including the US Exim Bank, the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), export credit agencies and global lenders.
Pakistan currently relies heavily on imported petroleum products to meet domestic energy demand, making refinery expansion and modernisation a key priority for reducing external financial pressure. Improved refining capacity could help lower import costs, create industrial opportunities and support economic stability.
The proposed Honeywell plan reflects growing international interest in Pakistan’s energy sector and highlights opportunities for foreign investment in critical infrastructure projects. Government officials believe such partnerships can play an important role in improving energy reliability and supporting future economic growth.
