Daducha Dam Project Expanded with Power Generation, Pipeline & Recreation Plans

The Daducha Dam project is being transformed into a multi-purpose development as authorities expand its scope beyond water storage. Located near Rawalpindi, the project will now include a feasibility study for electricity generation, a 25-kilometre water pipeline, and modern recreational facilities.

Officials have initiated a power feasibility study to explore electricity generation potential from the dam. At the same time, a major plan is underway to supply water to Rawalpindi through a dedicated pipeline, ensuring improved water availability for the growing urban population.

Once completed, the dam is expected to provide around 35 million gallons of water per day, making it a critical infrastructure project for the region. Authorities have also directed the preparation of PC-I documents and land acquisition for the pipeline route.

The project involves large-scale land acquisition and is being developed with the support of the Frontier Works Organisation. Initially proposed in 2001 with an estimated cost of Rs7 billion, the project has now escalated to over Rs52 billion due to delays.

In addition to water supply and potential energy generation, the dam site is planned to become a major recreational hub. Proposed features include a European-style park, boating facilities, and tourism-friendly spaces aimed at attracting visitors from nearby areas.

Authorities also plan to create a habitat for migratory birds, enhancing the ecological and tourism value of the project. Nearby settlements will also be connected to the water supply system, ensuring broader community benefits.

The expansion of Daducha Dam reflects a shift toward integrated infrastructure development, combining water management, energy potential, and tourism to support regional growth and sustainability.
