The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government is working on a major amendment to restore the district tier in the local government system, which was abolished in 2019. According to official sources, the proposed changes are part of revisions to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Local Government Act, 2013, and have already been sent for legal vetting.
Under the new proposal, the government is also planning to revise population limits for village and neighbourhood councils. The move is aimed at restructuring the local governance system and improving administrative efficiency. However, concerns have been raised regarding the powers that will be given to the revived district tier.
The proposal is currently under review, and final approval will depend on the provincial cabinet and chief minister’s consent. Discussions are ongoing about the distribution of authority between district, tehsil, and provincial levels, making this a key development in KP’s political and administrative system.
