Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has unveiled a wide-ranging education reform programme aimed at modernising government schools and expanding educational opportunities for students across the province.
Speaking at a ceremony in Arifwala, the chief minister announced that Nawaz Sharif Schools of Eminence will be established in every tehsil to provide high-quality, modern education and improve academic standards throughout Punjab.
Maryam Nawaz said the provincial government is committed to transforming the public education system by upgrading government schools and ensuring children from all socioeconomic backgrounds have equal access to quality education.
As part of the initiative, the government will distribute 100,000 free electric bikes to students to improve access to educational institutions. In addition, 100,000 laptops will be provided to deserving students, while 50,000 merit-based scholarships will be awarded to encourage academic excellence and reduce financial barriers to higher education.
The Punjab government has also allocated Rs40 billion to improve infrastructure in government schools. The funds will be used to construct new classrooms, provide furniture, install clean drinking water facilities, upgrade washrooms, improve electricity and ventilation, and ensure schools offer a safe and modern learning environment.
The chief minister announced that government schools are being equipped with science, mathematics, computer, and information technology laboratories. For the first time, artificial intelligence (AI) laboratories will also be introduced, enabling students to gain practical experience in emerging technologies.
Encouraging students to prepare for the future, Maryam Nawaz urged them to focus on artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotics, saying these fields will play a key role in tomorrow’s job market and economic growth.
She further revealed plans to establish 300 modern schools across Punjab as part of the province’s long-term education strategy. According to the chief minister, admissions for the Nawaz Sharif Schools of Eminence have already attracted significant public interest, with thousands of applications submitted for a limited number of seats.
Addressing public safety, Maryam Nawaz urged parents to remain cautious during the ongoing monsoon season and avoid sending children to unsafe locations. She expressed sorrow over recent incidents involving children and stressed the importance of ensuring their safety.
The chief minister also announced the continued expansion of green electric bus services to provide students with safe, affordable, and environmentally friendly transportation, particularly in underserved areas.
