Khawaja Asif has expressed optimism about a potential agreement between the United States and Iran, stating that Pakistan stands to benefit significantly from any peace settlement in the region.
Speaking amid rising tensions in the Gulf, the defence minister highlighted that improved relations between Washington and Tehran could lead to enhanced regional stability and stronger border security for Pakistan. He noted that peace in the region would reduce security threats, particularly along Pakistan’s western borders.
Asif emphasized that Pakistan has played a constructive diplomatic role in facilitating dialogue between the two countries. He added that Islamabad’s balanced approach and longstanding ties with Iran have positioned it as a credible mediator in ongoing negotiations.
The minister pointed out that if sanctions on Iran are lifted, Pakistan could gain economically by importing energy resources such as gas and oil through direct land routes. This would reduce reliance on distant international markets and lower transportation costs.
He also underlined that improved ties with Iran would help secure the border region, which has occasionally been affected by cross-border militancy. Strengthening cooperation with Iran, he said, would contribute to long-term peace and stability.
Discussing broader regional dynamics, Asif noted that Pakistan’s security situation has improved over the past year, crediting the country’s armed forces for strengthening national stability.
He further stated that successful diplomatic engagement and regional peace efforts would enhance Pakistan’s global standing and reinforce its role as an important player in international affairs.
The remarks come at a time when renewed hostilities and ongoing diplomatic efforts continue to shape the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East, with potential implications for countries across the region, including Pakistan.
