Sindh Assembly Rejects Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Resolution on May 12 Victims Amid Tense Session

A tense session of the Sindh Assembly unfolded as a resolution presented by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf to pay tribute to victims of the May 12, 2007 incident was rejected by the speaker.

The resolution was introduced by PTI parliamentary leader Shabbir Qureshi after the day’s official agenda had concluded. He emphasized that several pro-democracy groups had rallied on May 12 and that innocent lives were lost during the violence.

However, Speaker Syed Awais Qadir Shah ruled the resolution out of order, leading to objections from senior Pakistan Peoples Party leader Nisar Ahmed Khuhro. Expressing dissatisfaction over the handling of the matter, Khuhro staged a walkout from the assembly session.

During the same sitting, the assembly unanimously passed a resolution against honour killings, calling for justice in the case of Rubina Chandio. Health Minister Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho strongly condemned such practices and questioned the continued existence of jirgas in cases related to karo-kari.

Officials informed the house that multiple arrests had been made in connection with the case, while efforts were underway to protect vulnerable individuals and prevent further incidents.

In another development, the assembly rejected a resolution addressing child labour concerns in Karachi, stating that existing laws were already in place to handle such issues.

Health concerns were also discussed during the session, with authorities highlighting rising risks of malaria and dengue, particularly during the monsoon season. Preventive measures, including anti-dengue spraying and increased hospital preparedness, were emphasized.

The session reflected both political tensions and ongoing social and health challenges, with lawmakers debating critical issues affecting the province.
