Pakistan has achieved a major milestone in its energy sector as Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) officially launched commercial production from the Baragzai X-01 (Slant) well located in Kohat.
The company described the project as Pakistan’s largest-ever oil and gas discovery from a single well, marking a significant breakthrough in domestic energy production.
Production Capacity and Output
The Baragzai X-01 well has already become the highest-producing well in the country. With the latest addition, it contributes around 10% of OGDCL’s total crude oil production.
Current production includes:
- 5,300 barrels of oil per day
- 17 million standard cubic feet per day of gas
- 15 tonnes per day of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)
Cumulatively, output has reached:
- 15,000 barrels per day of oil
- 45 million cubic feet per day of gas
Officials expect production to increase further to 25,000 barrels per day of oil and 60 million cubic feet per day of gas in the near future.
Economic Impact
The project is set to deliver strong economic benefits for Pakistan. According to OGDCL estimates:
- Daily revenue: Rs156 million
- Monthly revenue: Rs4.7 billion
- Annual revenue: Rs57 billion
Additionally, the project is expected to save around $329 million annually in foreign exchange by reducing reliance on imported fuels.
Infrastructure and Development
To support production, OGDCL completed an 8-kilometre pipeline in record time and integrated the well with existing facilities at Mela and Nashpa. Enhancements were also made in gas processing and oil storage systems to ensure smooth operations.
Strategic Importance
The launch of this project comes at a crucial time when Pakistan is striving to reduce its dependence on imported energy. Increased domestic production will not only strengthen energy security but also help stabilise the economy by lowering import bills.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by key officials, including Ali Pervaiz Malik, highlighting the national importance of this achievement.
